Partners for years. ENRICH's A Team. Read their interview here.
How long have you been partners?
Danielle (D): 3 years
How did you find out about Enrich?
Rueben (R): I asked a friend; she told me about these great ENRICH classes.
D: I’m trying to remember the first day you came….you didn’t have a partner and I worked with you and I thought you were great and wanted to be partners.
R: We made a good team. I was happy she prepared the classes very well; she always has something new to do and a new activity and always an idea of "let's get to work."
Where are you from, Rueben?
R: Spain
How has ENRICH helped you?
R: [In summary] vocabulary and pronunciation.
D: Pronunciation was his most important objective.
R: pronoun cation is the most difficult
D: I can never find a grammar worksheet he can’t do!
R: he ends up teaching me a lot about Spanish
What have been your favorite moment together?
R: I always walk in excited to meet with her....so each moment is wonderful. I do not remember any in particular because there are so many moments. I’m lucky to have her as my partner.
D: Well my favorite moment….well I liked when [I gave you] a tour of campus because I got to meet your family. Also the class that we talked about your wife finding a job, I felt like you were very excited that class and you had great energy because you were happy with your Enlgish and how you used that in a business setting.
What was your biggest fear joining the program?
D: No fears!
R: I felt uncomfortable, because there was a lot of noise but nothing too big.
Rueben, when was the first time you came here?
5 years ago…..The [first thing I saw] was the liberty bell of Philedelphia and the bell was huge! That was my first impression coming here; I was excited.
D: He loves to explore. He’s always the one that tells me about new restuarants.
R: Chapel hill is a special place.
How as the community supported you during your time here?
R: We’ve had the support of the community so many times. Our apartment was burned down by a fire [recently]. A lot of people around the community helped us get a new place, furniture, even food for the first week….that was amazing. We think the people here do not expect help. The authorities do not give all the help, the people do. It’s very nice and very giving. We don’t have that kind of support back in Spain.
What has been your favorite thing in the United States?
D: Wow I can’t even answer that!
R: We love traveling. The most important thing that we have found here….the people. Honestly, the people.
My English is not perfect. I didn’t find any problem; I always found people try to understand me and are willing to understand me and not judge mental. This is a place always incorporating people from around the world. We are a nation of many colors, and that is amazing.
